Darren Fletcher Steps In After Amorim Sacking

Ruben Amorim is officially out from his spell with Manchester United. One year in with such big expectations along mixed results, finally ended up to zero patience. United then hit the emergency button and hand the keys to Darren Fletcher as caretaker. Can Fletcher actually lift the squad?

The Amorim era has officially ended

After deciding to take charge of Manchester United at the end of 2024, Amorim was widely regarded as the right appointment. At the time, he had led Sporting to the Portuguese league title and maintained a high level of consistency. In addition, his tactical approach helped turn Viktor Gyökeres into a highly prolific goalscorer.

Amorim’s ability to build a system from the ground up was a key reason Manchester United were interested in his services. Furthermore, he was set to turn 40 at the time, aligned with the club’s long-term vision. Manchester United were seeking a figure who could lead the team not just for one or two seasons, but over a sustained period.

However, not everything went according to what both the club and Ruben Amorim had envisioned. Amorim was sacked after recording 24 wins in 63 matches. Under his leadership, Manchester United even suffered more defeats than victories.

”This situation became a ticking time bomb not only for Amorim, but for nearly all of his predecessors as well. Manchester United have yet to find a figure who possesses the same aura, authority, and spirit as the great Sir Alex Ferguson.”

Fletcher or Ole Gunnar Solksjaer?

Following the announcement of Amorim’s dismissal, public speculation quickly turned to who would be the most suitable replacement. Several names were mentioned, including Zinedine Zidane, José Mourinho, Jürgen Klopp, and Xavi Hernández. These names were not mentioned without reason, as they are all managers with proven track records.

In addition, several of these candidates were not managing any club at the time. It would have made negotiations easier if Manchester United had decided to pursue them. However, it did not take long for the club’s board to settle on a decision.

Manchester United officially appointed Darren Fletcher as interim caretaker until the end of the season. The club legend led the Red Devils in their home match against Burnley on January 8. A 2–2 draw marked Fletcher’s debut as the team’s new tactical leader.

”However, several rumors have also suggested that Manchester United may be considering Ole Gunnar Solskjær as a future option to manage the club. The question is, what would happen if Darren Fletcher were to succeed in improving the team’s performances during his short tenure with the club?”

So, is it gonna be Fletcher, Ole, or someone else?
