Despite not being a dominant sport in Indonesia, tennis has always produced talented players. From Yayuk Basuki, Angelique Widjaja, to Christopher Rungkat, Indonesia holds fond memories in the sport. Now, the future of Indonesian tennis is in the hands of Janice Tjen.

Started pro at age of 16
Janice started her professional career as a women’s tennis player in 2018. She was only a 16-year-old at the time. Actually, Janice turned pro after being offered by a friend.
Janice then became interested and began her professional tennis pursuits in a very young age. Later, in 2022, Janice was ranked 960th in the world, according to the WTA. In the same year, she was also selected to represent Indonesia at the 2022 Asian Games.
”Competing in the doubles event, she managed to win a bronze medal in her first charm. Together with Aldila Sutjiadi, Janice successfully made the Red and White flag fly high in Asia.”
Matter of fact, it’s just the beginning of the right-handed prodigy.
Breaking into world’s top 100
Janice career grew further, such as won her first of 7 ITF singles and 2 ITF doubles titles. After achieving impressive results, she ranked 412th in 2024 and went 130th in early this year. Afterward, Janice competed in WTA Sao Paulo 2025 tournament and making it to the finals.
This year, Janice achieved her highest ranking ever and made it into the top 100. Currently, the 23-year-old rising star is ranked 98th in the world. Her name now stands alongside the legendary Yayuk Basuki and Angelica Widjaja, who were once ranked in singles top 100.
Today, Janice officially became the WTA 125 Jinan champion. She overcame a three-set thriller against Anna Bondar with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. She also went historic for Indonesia with competing in Grand Slam tournament after two decade long-wait.
At just 23 years old, Janice Tjen has accomplished tremendous milestones. Seems like sky is only the limit for the nation’s next superstar.
